  • Technology Is Only An Enabler, It Is Not The End And Be All Of Business.

Most people think that technology alone is what makes startups successful. But this is not true at all. The technology is just an enabler, it isn’t the solution to business. You must identify what makes your business tick, and then bring in technology to solve that. Think of Uber, the GPS technology enables it to…

  • Why Do Women Apply For Jobs They Are Overqualified For?

It is said that women apply for jobs only when they meet hundred percent of the job requirements whereas men apply for jobs even when they meet just 50 percent of the job requirements. Why is it so? Men have seen their less than stellar colleagues ascend to the CEO corner office, and so are…

  • What’s The Top Career Choice For GenZs.

As GenZs come into the workplace, what sort of careers do they prize? The earlier generations were imbibed in traditional careers such as lawyer, doctor, engineer, accountant. This is what their parents went to school for. But now new careers are propping up and it is likely they will be the defining careers of the…

Content Creation is one of the fastest growing careers. With an access to a notepad, and a camera, practically anyone can relay their story to the world. There are as many content creation ideas as there are people, and some of the content creation ideas include lifestyle, careers, politics and governance, celebrities and entertainment, and even cleaning of cemeteries. So, how does content creation earn money for you? One, you must have a unique angle in which you cover issues. Just covering issues as the mainstream media does is not going to get you a lot of followers. For instance, why not cover inner city stories as the national media concentrates on national politics? As you get an audience for your stories, definitely brands will start coming as they want to partner with you. So, how do you ensure that you get the maximum value from brands that want to partner with you but at the same time, that you don’t lose yourself in your content creation journey?

As a first step, ensure that you don’t just splash ads in your content. Roll your ads around your content. That is have advertorials. That is ads that are related to your content. If for instance, you are doing content about college admissions, then there sure are colleges that are bound to advertise with you, and what’s more you could morph the ad around your content. Most people hate being sold to and that’s why splash on the face kind of ads just don’t work, and why you need advertorials. If you are doing content based on personal finance and building a savings and investment culture, then banks would want to approach you for your audience to open bank accounts. Having advertorials could make you charge premium amounts especially if you have high conversion rates. If you have content that highly converts then you don’t need millions as audience in order to convert, and that’s why sometimes, people with as few as 10,000 followers get boatloads of ad money while someone with millions of followers has very few ads on their content.

The mistake that most content creators make is they become mellow when they get the big corporate endorsements. And your audience can detect when you lose your authenticity. If possible, separate the content creation side from the ad business side, and then have a team of two or three that can bridge the divide. It’s just like the search engines or TV. The fact that you pay highly for an online ad does not mean that Google will suddenly put your web content at the top of the search engine rankings. Or the fact that a nondescript politician such as Marianne Williamson or Robert F Kennedy Jr paid for an ad by the millions does not mean that suddenly Fox News or CNN will suddenly put them as the top of their news bulletins, otherwise, they would lose their audiences. The beauty about advertorials is they naturally morph around the stories you are doing and therefore is a much subtle way of advertising than a splash in the face kind of advertising.

  • With Declining Revenues, Are Newspapers Going To Be Extinct?

Many under 35s are not reading newspapers anymore. They can get that from their social media news feeds anytime they log into their social media accounts. Now it seems that social media breaks the news, and the purpose of the mainstream media is just to confirm the news. At least, Rupert Murdoch the owner of…

AFRICA’S YOUTH MUST TAKE UP CHALLENGE TO DEVELOP AFRICA

By YOUNG AFRICAN LEADERS INITIATIVE

3 MINUTE READ

YALI Network Member Collins Mabinda recent op-ed in All Africa:

Recently, I joined a network of young Africans who are each working in a myriad of ways to develop the continent. I joined the Young African Leaders Initiative Network, which is an initiative of the United States government and African countries. The initiative seeks to promote a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Africa that is open for business, entrepreneurship, and civic opportunities.

Each of the YALI network members has pledged to help develop Africa in their own little way.

Among the YALI network members, there is a flourishing farmer in Morogoro, Tanzania, a civic leader in Lagos, Nigeria who is fighting against malaria in a sprawling slum in Lagos, and a Zimbabwean entrepreneur who founded the first innovation hub in Zimbabwe, Hypercube. Some of the YALI network members will be chosen to become Mandela Fellows, which will see them attend leading institutions in the United States for eight weeks. An additional small group will stay behind and be offered internship opportunities in leading companies in the US. Ultimately, the fellowship will culminate in a a summit between African leaders and leading American figures.

The partnership between the United States and Africa is now informed by the fact that Africa has to move from the periphery of world affairs, and move to the centre, where it becomes part and parcel of the global conversation.

This is an Africa that will be known for its opportunities and will be at the desk of policymakers in the White House, London, and other global capitals is what we seek as YALI network members.

Evidently, not all of us will be selected to become Mandela Fellows. However, I urge even those who will not be selected to become Mandela Fellows to continue engaging in the various networking opportunities, and work to build Africa one step at a time. One day, their efforts will be rewarded, and they will get other opportunities to showcase their talents.

Moreover, as young Africans, it is our duty to ensure that we create a new narrative for Africa. Africa is on the brink of takeoff, never mind a few instabilities here and there. It would be a tragedy if outsiders see Africa’s potential, but Africans don’t see this potential.
